We both regarded religion as a metaphor for what we really believe in. It's a way of communicating with people. At the same time, (Daniel) was very enticed and enjoyed talking in religious vocabulary. He was interested in how people believed what they believed. He did an article about the Muslim calendar -- how it developed, how experts disagreed on when Ramadan comes in. He called me up (from London) and said, 'You're a scientist. You should tell me how to compute celestial motions.' I couldn't help him there. He did the research and came up with the difference between two (clerics') methods of computing. Judea Pearl
