My mother always said he was a very nice, endearing man, unlike his portrayals in the movies (as a child-hating, scheming, mean-spirited person), which I think was a product of him trying to get a laugh, ... Dad always described him as tremendously alert and ambitious. He had a hard shell, but underneath he had some softness. Steve Allen
